Plastic Material Properties Plastic materials are very different from metals. This is an import fact to note because many plastic parts are designed to replace metal parts by the designers who are accustomed to working with metal materials. While most plastics manufacturers publish material property data sheets for each specific resin produced, it is important to understand that published properties for a given plastic material are based on simple, small samples molded in relatively ideal conditions. It is very important to understand that the properties observed in a molded part may differ significantly from published values. This variance is dependent on a complex combination of part design, specific material behavior, and manufacturing process design.
